Seven Little Known Backyard Gardening Tips

Posted on Dec 15, 2009 under Gardening Tips | No Comment

You only in need two things- determination and know-how, to make a simple yet well-maintained garden in a yard. These are some tips on how to keep your garden by the yard looking glamorous and spruced up.

1. Deadheading

Always remember to keep your garden free from dried leaves and wilted flowers. Removing dead flower heads or deadheading will encourage the plants to bloom for a longer period of time. Some annual plants and many perennials like Dahlias and Geraniums, benefit from having spent blooms removed.

2. Pinch out tops

Foliage plants like Coleus and many different types of plants respond with a burst in growth when their tops are pinched. You can make the plants much more bushier and make them bloom by pinching out the top. Plants like Fuchsias become leggy unless you pinch them put.

3. Fertilize lightly

If you want a boost in your vegetation then you can add minimum amount of fertilizer. You need to fertilize your garden frequently because the nutrients may wash away if you fertilize your garden frequently. Liquid fertilizer that has been applied fortnightly has been found to be more beneficial than granules as the leaves readily absorb it. If you regularly apply a half strength solution of liquid fertilizer to container plants then they will become considerably healthier.

4. Weed out

Weeding is one of the best ways to preserve the beauty of your garden. Always remember that weeds compete with your garden for nutrients and moisture. You can also leave the weeds down to mulch if they are not close to seeding. Rather than using a spray you can use a wick applicator for applying your weedicide, this will also protect your plants from the spray drift.

5. Water them well

A good tip is to give your garden a thorough soaking once every week. However, to prevent erosion make sure there is no run off. The growth of deeper roots will be encouraged with deep watering. This will also help the plant to withstand dry spells.

6. Say no to chemicals

Try to avoid chemicals as much as you can. These are not only harmful for humans but also kill the predators of pest in your gardens. There are many organic alternatives, which work as well as the chemicals ones.

Your garden will soon become the envy of your neighbors if you follow these simple tips.

Reversing Endothelial Dysfunction

Posted on Dec 15, 2009 under Best Tomatoes | No Comment

One of the precursors to atherosclerosis and heart disease is endothelial dysfunction. Because endothelial dysfunction can appear years before more serious heart disease symptoms, it is wise to try and repair this problem before it turns into something more serious.

It is estimated that endothelial dysfunction affects approximately 50% of those over the age of 40.

The endothelium is the cells that line the inner surface of all blood vessels including arteries and veins. Any time the endothelium fails to function as it should, this can be considered endothelial dysfunction.

When the endothelium is functioning properly, it is responsible for mediation of coagulation, platelet adhesion, immune function, and control of volume and electrolyte content of the intravascular and extra vascular spaces.

Several things can cause endothelial dysfunction, including cigarette smoking and diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes. When the endothelium does not function properly, veins and arteries have difficulty dilating properly. These problems are thought to be the precursor to atherosclerosis, which is a leading cause of heart disease.

However, it is possible to reverse endothelial dysfunction by paying attention to your lifestyle. Reversing endothelial dysfunction before it becomes more serious is important to protecting your cardiovascular health.

There are several changes you can make to help reverse endothelial dysfunction. Here are some suggestions to help get your body headed on the right track.

First, watch your diet. It is believed that trans fats in particular can lead to endothelial dysfunction. So, it’s important to remove trans fats from your diet entirely. Read product labels looking for the words hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated. If you see these words in the ingredients, stay away.

Reduce your level of other saturated fats, too. This means reducing the amount of red meat and egg yolks you consume; making the bulk of your protein come from fish, poultry and low fat dairy products.

Another important factor in reducing endothelial dysfunction is controlling your weight. Eat right and get regular exercise to ensure that your weight falls within a normal range.

If you have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, you should treat these in order to protect endothelial function. Exercise and proper diet can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

However, if diet and exercise don’t prove to be enough, your doctor may prescribe medication to help get these numbers under control.

Another important way you can improve your endothelial function is by making sure your diet is rich in anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants are responsible for combating free radicals in our bodies. Free radicals are created as we process our food each day.

If we don’t consume anti-oxidants, these free radicals can damage our DNA and cells, including the cells that make up the endothelium.

So, in addition to making sure that your diet is low in saturated and trans fats, make sure it’s rich in anti-oxidant powerhouses.

All fresh fruits and vegetables contain anti-oxidants, but some are more potent than others. Artichokes, asparagus, tomatoes and red beans are the best vegetables to eat and the best fruits include blueberries and pomegranates.

In addition to fruits and vegetables, anti-oxidants can be found in dark chocolate, coffee and green tea. Green tea is a particularly effective because it contains EGCG, one of the most potent anti-oxidants, belonging to the flavonol-3 class of flavonoids.

In recent years, much research has been performed on how our bodies use these flavonoids to combat free radicals and protect us from disease. This research has concluded that there are factors that determine how efficiently our bodies use the anti-oxidants we consume.

The first of these factors is our metabolism. In some situations, anti-oxidants may not be metabolized as efficiently as others. Factors that affect metabolism of anti-oxidants include our body’s overall ability to process the foods we eat, including the efficiency of our digestive systems.

For example, a diet that is loaded with processed foods can cause the digestive system to slow down and may result in important nutrients being swept from the body before being absorbed properly.

However, if you’re eating a heart healthy diet, you’ll avoid processed foods and most of this problem should be eliminated.

In addition, damaged cells appear to have more difficulty metabolizing anti-oxidants, particularly flavonoids. For this reason, if you have a significant amount of endothelial dysfunction, your body may not process the beneficial flavonoids as efficiently as we’d like.

According to a study reported by the UK Tea Council, your body’s ability to metabolize the flavonoids in green tea affects the amount of benefit you’ll gain in terms of restoring endothelial function.

If your body is ineffective at metabolizing the flavonoids, you’ll gain less benefit per cup of tea.

Of course, it’s impossible for each of us to know how effectively we metabolize anti-oxidants. But, we shouldn’t lose hope. Even if our bodies don’t efficiently use the flavonoids we’re consuming, we can make up for the deficiency simply by increasing quantity. Most doctors recommend that we drink at least three cups of green tea each day, anyway.

As with many health concerns, all the information we’re given can pile up and be confusing in the long run. But, a few things are very simple. The first is that protecting our endothelial function protects us from heart disease in the long run. The second is that, along with a healthy diet and exercise, anti-oxidant rich foods like green tea can help us accomplish this.

So what if it takes a few cups each day? It just means more tea for us to enjoy!

Is our Education Complete Without Knowing About Marijuana Germination?

Posted on Dec 15, 2009 under Best Seeds | No Comment

Marijuana, like any other hallucinogen plant or substance is illegal in some countries. Of course, there are some parts of the world more civilized than others that have understood cannabis as a personal choice. Thus they’ve legalized it. Places like these are very appreciated by tourists because they get to try not necessarily illegal substances, but perhaps a whole new lifestyle in a place where pot is not an issue and they can make their own decisions. This is what education needs most – to let people assume responsibility for their acts. Letting them grow Dutch marijuana seeds and witness marijuana germination shouldn’t be a problem as long as they know their risks and they’re willing to take them.

Also called weed, cheeba cheeba, devil’s grass or pot, marijuana has had a lot of names throughout the years and it has been a much disputed subject. A lot of people talk about it without knowing anything about this plant, its growth process and the effort put into obtaining the best products from it. Few have paid interest in the details so many websites offer about Dutch marijuana seeds or about marijuana germination. Most only get to know one fact about it -that it’s good for smoking. But cannabis also has a medical purpose as it is used in treatments for serious diseases like glaucoma. Because of its curative powers, cannabis is not illegal if prescribed by a doctor in a certain drug. However, marijuana is mostly known for the hallucinations or state of well being it induces.

Growing marijuana is very tricky if you want to obtain high quality products. Cannabis can survive and develop in any conditions and in any kind of soil, but it won’t meet certain standards. As most people who are interested in this plant use it to sell it for treatments, they have to know certain details that allow the growth of quality cannabis. First of all, the seeds are of primary importance. Dutch marijuana seeds are the most recommended and, if one browses the Internet a little, he can find information as to why this is so. The Dutch marijuana seeds are known to be the best ones out there and they insure a high marijuana germination rate. After getting some Dutch marijuana seeds (and this shouldn’t be very difficult with a little research and an online order), careful plantation and close surveillance are necessary.

Marijuana germination of a considerable number of Dutch marijuana seeds is insured only by following strict rules as to how the plant should be looked after. The best place to germinate the Dutch marijuana seeds is in a sterile soil, vermiculite or hydroponic medium of rockwool. You will see the results, meaning the marijuana germination process, after just a week. Vermiculite is such a good medium because it can give the seeds a lot of oxygen. The seeds need to have water at all times and for expected results a nutrient solution is a great idea. The container the seeds are put into is very important also. It’s not recommended to transplant the seeds more than two times before the first harvest so you should put the Dutch marijuana seeds in the same pot you plan to grow the plant in. As one can notice after carefully examining only the instructions that have to be followed to witness the marijuana germination, a lot of hard work has to be put into growing cannabis.

Even after the marijuana germination period has ended and the plant has sprouted, one still has to take good care of it. The plant needs darkness during the marijuana germination period, so you can cover the soil where the Dutch marijuana seeds are with black paper to keep the light out. After the seeds have sprouted they will need light. A sun light or an UV lamp can be used because the small plant needs a lot of light. It’s best to keep them under a light source for eighteen hours a day.

Not knowing about the effort that has to be put into making the marijuana germination happen and not paying any interest in the difference between normal seeds and Dutch marijuana seeds is a major mistake. Education should involve all this information because a certain respect for the entire process would be induced to teenagers who only care about smoking. Knowing of the positive as well as the negative effects marijuana has on people would be a huge step in civilization. With this data and more, children would know the power such a plant has over the human body. They would learn to respect and sometimes fear the unknown and most importantly, they would learn responsibility for their actions is no one’s but their own.

Children should learn about the entire process to make marijuana germination happen and about the hard work put in. They should be instructed on the medical effects of treatments that include plants developed from Dutch marijuana seeds. Maybe later, they will wish to open a pharmacy that sells products based on cannabis. People would learn to hope for new discoveries made by these children in the future because someone told them, when they were easy to impress, how the marijuana germination should be handled and what seeds to use. You never know when knowledge takes a leap forward if education helps young minds to better comprehend positive aspects and hope to eliminate the negative ones.

The Beauty of Edging Your Flower Garden

Posted on Dec 15, 2009 under Best Perennials | No Comment

The edging surrounding your garden is practically as important as the flowers themselves. The edging frames your garden, like the frame of a picture. It gives it well defined boundaries to separate your flower garden from the rest of your yard. A good edging enhances the beauty of your flower garden, turning it into a masterpiece.

These is an assortment of edging options to choose from, and it is up to you to pick the one that will best compliment your garden. A low retaining wall, made from brick or rock and mortar, is a popular choice, as it is solid and permanently boarders your garden. These types of wall edgings can be quite expensive; however, and you may decide that you would like to choose something not as permanent to edge your garden. You never know when you will want your garden to expand!

Another option is to simply line up bricks or rocks, using no mortar. Bricks can be lined up, stacked in a short wall, or set up diagonally, leaning against one another. Rocks can also be lined up or stacked to crate an edging for your garden. Rocks should be small enough to be easily moved, while large enough to make a visual impact. Rocks can be found while digging in your garden or for other landscaping projects, or in a friend’s yard or empty lot. Just be sure to ask for permission before taking rocks from someone elses property.

You can also purchase edging materials at a home improvement store or garden center. Have a look around and check out all the options that might look good in your garden. You can choose from plastic edging, which provides a simple border when stuck vertically in the ground, tiny fences, landscaping timbers, and boarders made from artificial rock. The options are almost endless. Just be sure that what ever you decide, that you select a good quality, durable product. You need something that will hold up, so you wont have to replace your edging year after year.

Border plants, such as perennials like alpine phlox, make a beautiful, natural edging. Low growing plants that grow quickly and can be divided and replanted each spring make a nice choice, so that you do not have to purchase new annuals every year. As with selecting any plants for your garden, make sure that you select plants that will work with your climate and the amount of sun your garden receives.

The lush, thick growth of comfrey, make it an excellent choice to border a large garden. It will stop grass from encroaching on your garden with its heavy growth. The flowers are beautiful and will be attractive in your garden, and you can use the leaves as mulch when they fall off. Comfey is only appropriate for large gardens, however, as smaller gardens can quickly become overtaken.

A delicious choice for edging your garden would be to plant strawberries or herbs. You can use the fresh herbs in your meals when cooking – just clip off as much as you need when you visit your garden.

You can select from a variety of plants, rocks, bricks or store bought edging to border your garden. Keep in mind that the edging you select should serve as a frame to accentuate and display your flower garden as though it is a work of art.

Summer Garden – Best Ways To Set It Up

Posted on Dec 15, 2009 under Best For Garden | 10 Comments

To take up as a profession on gardening you need to do a lot of planning. Your focus should be on what to plant keeping in mind the location and the facilities you can afford. With a good planning a wonderful job can be done even the least accessories and requirements. So you have to plan on what to plant and where to plant. You should study the features of every plant that you choose so that you give them the best care and protection. Once all this is done you can get ready to dig and dirty your hands. A summer garden would give you the best yield and a good notable result.

While seeding the plants you can start from a certain area of the whole lot and end up with the last one. Seeding must be done at a slow and careful pace. However you need to note to down the days that you have planted each of the area on. As you study about the plants you will realize that the growing seasons differ for different vegetables and plants. Some grow well by earlier plantings and some bloom due to later plantings. For the first time you need to note the exact period it takes and later you can grow the crop in intervals that will give you a constant yield.

There are certain plants like creepers and bitter guards that would tend to grow on poles. Hence the proper requirements must be provided. This can also be done to remove the lack of space. You can also use this crop as a safe guarder to the other plants that require less sunshine for its growth by planting then close to the poles. You need to ensure that there is sufficient number of poles so that it does not lead to congestion. So such ideas can be empowered for better maintenance and yield.

Seeding of plants in a given area must be carefully done. The plants needing less sunshine for growth must be seeded at areas where there is relatively less exposure to sunlight and plants that require more water can be placed on a slope that is downwards such that they get maximum available water to prosper. These are some good ideas that can be worked out when there is limited recourses and at such times this would be the optimum way to take over gardening as a hobby. Remember that some plants that require only limited water and these have to be placed in areas where limited water flows. Else these would deteriorate and eventually die. So give what is required not more, not less.

The plants grow healthy only and only if the soil is healthy. The fertilization of soil is very important and this must also be in optimum amounts. These are basic foundations that your plants would require to grow on. Once the process of planting is done you must make sure that timely care and attention is always supplied to gat the best possible yield from your garden. And be very careful while choosing the fertilizer and plant foods because there are certain restrictions on all these that differ for every area. Make sure whether it is permissible for your locality and only then go with the usage.

Pest control is another important factor. There are something called natural pests. It is always better that you for these because they are actually plants that can be grown along with the other plants and are also pest controllers. There are no side effects this way. For safety from bigger insects a chicken wire can be used. A natural and humane way to get rid of pests would be the best idea than to go for harmful pesticides.

What vegetables are best for training and fighting estrogen build-up?

Posted on Dec 09, 2009 under Best Vegetables | 2 Comments

I hear that Brocolli is the best because it contains Indole 3 carbinol for its estrogen modulating effect.

Does anyone have any more information on this and what other vegetables are recomended to be eaten if youre into weight-training and cardio nearly every day. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Try to avoid soybeans and soy milk as there have been many newsreleases that have informed about the dangers of soy for male vegans.

I do not really know about vegetables that fight estrogen but I have heard that testosterone helps in fighting estrogen, so basically working out intensely and really hard is great for fighting estrogen. Also the more muscle you have the more testosterone you may have or so I have heard (I am not sure) Eat lots of protein various times a day ( no soymilk)

Try to search the web for testosterone building exercises and foods If you are worried about the estrogen build up.

Organic Gardening – Six Beneficial Tips!

Posted on Dec 06, 2009 under Gardening Tips | No Comment

Organic garden is nothing but gardening with the help of all the naturally endowed gifts that we possess. It deals with how well we use the natural endowments for the purpose of creating the garden of our dreams.

Why would anyone want to have an organic garden? Here is the answer to the question.

1. It is the IN thing to do. With the help of the kitchen and garden waste that we get, one can be very eco-friendly and put the waste into good use though it is quite time consuming than opting for pesticides and fertilizers available in the market.

2. There is very little usage of chemicals in case of organic gardening as we tend to use only what is naturally available to us. Hence, we can be safe from many serious consequences which are faced if chemicals are used. Many researches have proved that even small amounts of chemicals found in fruits and vegetables due to use of fertilizers and pesticides can cause great damage to our health especially among children.

It is believed that on an average every child swallows at least 4 to 5 times more cancer causing agents from pesticides than an adult. Organic gardening helps in eliminating this issue. We need to keep it in mind that the main motive behind using pesticides is to kill little organisms.

3. Organic gardens are very eco friendly. Usually, the pesticides that we use are washed into water which in turn causes a lot of harm to the organisms which thrive in it. This is eliminated in case of organic gardens.

4. Helps in saving costs. As we do not have to purchase fertilizers and pesticides for keeping away pests and insects we are saved from spending the extra buck. The items that we use for organic gardens mostly come from our kitchen cupboard. And many times, we can grow other plants with the ability to keep insects and pests at bay along with the main plant that we intend to grow. For instance, marigold is often grown along with vegetables as they are very helpful in repelling aphids.

Another solution for the pest problem is by using a mixture of 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with a cup of cooking oil and using three tablespoons of this mixture with a quart of water to use as a pest spray on plants.

5. A mulch of pine needles will help in controlling the growth of weeds and will also keep the necessary moisture intact.

6. Organic gardening ensures a great environment to live for the generations to come.

Acne Natural Cure Ideas

Posted on Dec 06, 2009 under Best Tomatoes | 2 Comments

There are all kinds of chemicals and medications on the market that profess to help combat acne. While some of these work wonders for acne sufferers, others just don`t do much more than dry out the skin. Since acne is a very individualized condition with the root causes varying between people, it makes sense that the cures are pretty subjective, as well. Some of the best options many find are acne natural cure remedies. Some of these can be made at home and others can be found prepackaged by companies that specialize in herbal and natural remedies.

A lot of people who suffer from acne find they must try multiple remedy options to hit on the one that works for them. Many of those who actually find their individual cure do so through the natural arena. There are some very effective, non-chemical, treatments for acne. While not every product that claims to be an acne natural cure works, many in fact do.

The advantages to trying some of these acne natural cure ideas before trying harsher chemical treatments is simply the fact they are natural. They don`t introduce to the skin anything other than ingredients made by nature and they are generally safe to try. Even the prepackaged acne natural cures generally can boast this claim.

Some of the most common acne natural cure remedies include such commonly found ingredients as citrus juice, cinnamon, mint, tomatoes, potatoes and even sandalwood and rose water. Some of these ingredients, such as the citrus and tomatoes, do have a fairly high, but natural, acid content, so they need to be used in moderation.

When trying any acne natural cure, or chemical one for that matter, it`s important to start out with a single area. Do not apply creams, herbs, chemicals or anything else to the entire face on the first or even second use. Pick a spot that`s affected by an outbreak and use it. Check the spot frequently for allergic reactions or side effects. If these do occur, don`t proceed with further use of that particular product. Instead, move on and try a different type of remedy. While reactions to acne natural cures are generally minimal, they can happen. People can be allergic to an ingredient they didn`t even know they were. So, it`s best to play is safe by using the patch test.

If a particular acne natural cure product doesn`t do the trick, try a different one. Or, if a home remedy is desired, there are all kinds of options here, as well. For example, equal amounts of rose water and lime juice applied to the face for a few minutes before washing or radish seeds ground into a paste with water or even sesame seeds treated the same are said by many to present great acne natural cure options.

There are all kinds of cures for acne on the market. From acne natural cure alternatives to prescription medications, they almost all have a tendency to work for some people, but not necessarily others. Finding the right way to treat an individual case of acne will be an effort of trial and error, but when the right cure is found, it`s worth the work.
