Name few perennials that perform fine under shady conditions?
Posted on Oct 31, 2009 under Best Perennials | 5 CommentsI have lawn that receives 8 hours of sun light in summer and only 4 hours in winter. SO name few perennials that can flower well under such conditions. DOn,t tell me about impatiens and geraniums. I already have them.
I live in Islamabad, pakistan. The 8 hour sun that lawn receives is mostly filtered one.

Where do you live? MG gave you a nice list but it has no personal touch. I live in SoCal and have two areas just like the one that you’re talking about. My favorites are azalea (yes, they do Ok in summer sun) begonias and some of the sun tolerant ferns. The clivia is my favorite but 8 hours of sun in the summer may be too much. As with any perennial, you will have to baby them with more water and shade until they have become established.

Columbines and lobelias. I have these planted on the north side of my house, and they love it there. Lamiums (groundcovers) also like the shade, and have been bred to have larger flowers. I love the variety called Purple Dragon. Astilbes (false spirea), coral bells, tiarella (foam flowers), and Brunnera (bugloss) are some other choices.
I live in St. Louis.

A couple of my favorites were left out of the list…I like hostas and bleeding hearts. Ferns are great. Astibles are wonderful. Rhododendrons might also be considered…

I think you’d like a few Kimberly Queen Ferns, Elephant Ears, Sago Palms, and Mums maybe.
