Sunflowers can you grow for bird food? What is the best seeds for this?

Posted on Feb 24, 2010 under Best Seeds |

Any sunflower seed will work for growing bird food. Look for what you want, for example, one year I went for the giant sunflowers, they grew about 8′ tall with 18" flowers and filled with seeds. I left them in the yard over the winter and the birds fed straight from them. (A couple neighbors complained due mainly to the height and having large dead things potruding out from the ground.) Lately I have been going for shorter ones with multiple flowers per plant to give a longer showier display.

sunflowers are great for the birds. they love eating the seeds right off the plant it self. the flower attracts cardnals and chickades. the birds are not picky about the kind you plant . also the sgurrels and chickmonks love them. you can grow them where you can see them from a window, and when they are ready to eat from. the birds will enjoy and you can watch them eat from inside the house. enjoy the fun .

all sunflowers are great…when the flower heads start turning to seed heads you will know it…all types of song birds will be there picking the seeds then splitting the hulls to get to the inside…bluejays, cardinals, sparrow and the yellow finches are just a few of the birds you will have…hummingbirds also love sunflowers before they go to seed
i put out the ones with a single head on them but more of the ones that have multiple flowers on them..also there will be some seeds that hit the ground and next year they will sprout to start all over again…i live in zone 6, kentucky and always have volunteer plants from seeds the next year.

Just buy a packet of sunflower seeds that you would feed to the birds and plant these.Easy and cheap . If you save some of the ripe seeds , if you can beat the birds that is{cover the flower heads with a brown paper bag tied on with a piece of string} , lol , they can be planted next season , cheaper still .
