The Best Part of “Demon Seed” (Watch in HD!)
Posted on Aug 20, 2009 under Best Seeds | 25 Comments
Okay, I lied. There is no “best part” of “Demon Seed” because it happens to be one of the worst movies ever made! If there were a “best part,” however, it would be this – the climax.
In the post-feminist world of 1977, it was curious that a major production company (MGM) would be able to get away with casting a major star (Oscar winner Julie Christie) as a woman who is married to an inventor (Fritz Weaver) who invents a house with a mind of its own that actually – get this! – rapes Christie! That’s right, the house impregnates Christie and the result is what we have here – a baby that is half human and half computer!
With a terrible, perfunctory score by Jerry Fielding and special effects and production design that looks like it came from a thrift shop for about $25, this is one horrible mess of a movie, one that hasn’t quite gained cult status (though it would be wonderful as one of those shout-at-the-screen type Midnight Movie affairs.) “Demon Seed” was directed by Donald Cammell (co-director of “Performance.”)

A five-star rating! …
A five-star rating! Good special-effects for when it came out. This movie was way ahead of its time. What a premise! It must be THE all-time classic of its’ genre. Should have been as well-received as ‘Close Encounters’ that came out the same year.

I certainly hope …
I certainly hope the child gets speech therapy as she grows older, or she’s going to have a terrible social life.

LOL! If the wife in …
LOL! If the wife in this movie had any brains she would have went for the breakers. Talk about over the top acting! And as my girlfriend put it: “If that stupid scientist wants the dumb thing to live so badly, then HE can have the baby!”

Actually, I agree …
Actually, I agree with you BOTH1 It does seem cheesier to me know …AND scarier. Cheesier because of our advanced CGI effects, yet scarier because of it’s overall theme and the fact that anything seems possible due to our use of technology, no matter how heinous. Thanks for commenting!

Minority opinion: I …
Minority opinion: I liked it! Beautiful Julie Christie, better ending than the book, oddly optimistic. Hey, if people can make themselves believe an underground organization wanted Keanu Reeves’ MIND to save the world, they should have no trouble with the plot to “Demon Seed.”

You know, I really …
You know, I really love your comment. I see your point, I stand corrected, and you have made me re-evaluate this film completely. Now I am more happy than ever that I put it on! Thank you!

At last, someone …
At last, someone with a brain and a working imagination. How anyone can think this film is absurd / impossible / improbable or silly, today, in 2009, is beyond me. Thankfully. Take a look at tinyurl ox7q9q. Every day the technology that will make this scenario possible comes closer and closer. This film is prescient, and a work of genius. Great soundtrack too. for all the dimwits out there, sorry all you ADHD people, no car chases, explosions or gunfights. You have to THINK to enjoy this film.

Oh, but I have! …
Oh, but I have! There’s a film with Carol Kane called “The Mafu Cage” and this film — gotta be neck and neck as the worst ever1 Van Damme isn’t so bad, really. I mean, you know what you’re getting into with him, right? lol!
Do you have any other “worst” favorites???
Thanks for commenting!!!

Invents a house …
Invents a house with a mind of its own??” No–it is a supercomputer many miles away in a secret underground research complex funded & built by a powerful shady corporation. Their hidden agenda is to use it to control the world’s wealth, but it refuses to cooperate & has other plans to recreate itself and survive. Like a net virus it infiltrates the home of the chief reseach scientist who has a “hobby” lab there & computer system of its own & Julie Christie. Often silly, but also intelligent.

lol! So I’ve heard as far as the ending, that it’s an improvement over the Koontz novel. Thanks for commenting.

If people can …
If people can believe an underground org needed Keanu Reeves’ MIND to save the world, they should have no trouble with “Demon Seed.” it’s kinda of fun, and Julie Christie is great. The ending is a big improvement on the one from the novel, too.

I remember this movie! Weird, pompous, unbelievable…But for some reason, I didn’t forget it, it stayed with me; thank you for bringing (one) of the “best” parts of this film, and in a superb HD!

lol! Sorry if it …
lol! Sorry if it freaked you out. It IS weird. And Julie was just fabulous. Story goes that Warren Beatty saw this and told her something to the effect that, “I love you so much that I’m gonna tell you to your face — this is crap!” Thanks, however, for commenting — hope the nightmares aren’t too bad! lol!
