The Best Things in Life Are Free!

Posted on May 28, 2009 under Best Seeds |

Many of us spend our lives trying to make money (and therein lies our first mistake, more on this another time) without realising that we were born rich and that the best things in life are free.

I was talking to a couple of colleagues the other day about this same point. One agreed with this concept; the other was in total disagreement - a good balance to have for a passionate discussion!

When the singer, Robbie Williams, got his first major multi-million dollar recording contract he exclaimed:

“I’m rich beyond my wildest dreams.”

In reality we could all be saying those exact words for we are indeed rich though many of us just don’t realise it.

Our greatest riches lie in the things that we were given free. It is as Earl Nightingale in The Strangest Secret said,

“Our mind comes as standard equipment at birth. It is free and things that are given to us for nothing we place little value on. Things that we pay money for we value. The paradox is that exactly the reverse is true. Everything that is really worthwhile in life came to us free - our minds, our souls, our bodies, our hopes, our dreams, our ambitions intelligence, our love of family and children and friends and country - all these priceless possessions are free but the things that cost us money are really very cheap and can be replaced at any time.”

Imagine being given a plot of fertile land so rich that whatever you plant in it will grow. Take my mother for example, a multi-talented and very industrious woman who, among other things, could be described as a farmer. Over the years she has grown hot peppers, sweet peppers, carrots, pumpkins, lettuce, thyme, marjoram, sweet potatoes and I could go on and on. Nowadays she focuses primarily on orchids. My point is that whatever she planted grew and she learnt to take care of the plants to maximise their quality and yield.

What if she just left the land to its own devices? Well plants would still grow. In fact, she would often remark that weeds seemed to grow more rampantly than crops. Some of the plants would be beneficial; some not. One thing you can be certain of is that what would grow would be a random and haphazard affair with no consistency regarding produce or yield.

Our minds are just like fertile soil. Whatever we sow in our minds we will reap. However, although we are all born with this magnificent gift, it comes with seeds already sown in it. These seeds are a result of genetics. Also, as we grow there is a period of time where we do not have control over what is planted in our fertile minds. Our environment plants seeds in our mind, further conditioning it - just like my mother has no little control over the airborne seeds that land in her garden.

However, there comes a point when our awareness grows sufficiently that we can start to question and analyse what our senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) have been telling us. We start to use our intellectual faculties - perception, reason, will, memory, intuition and imagination - however, our environment will again play a role in determining how well we develop our intellect. In many cases our intellectual faculties such as our imagination and ability to reason can be stamped right out of us.

These are priceless gifts but we don’t appreciate them. We yearn instead for the physical things that have the price tag on them. The higher the price tag the more we tend to want it and more disillusioned and frustrated we become when we don’t get it. What many fail to realise is that there is a link between these things and our mind. After all, it is our minds that created these things in the first place.

Physical items cars, houses, boats, etc. are cheap, replaceable and can be destroyed in an instant whereas the intangible things such as love, joy and happiness are ours to have in an infinite supply and no one but ourselves can deny us of these things. These things and more are our birthright. We are indeed born rich.

Let’s go back to the material things that many yearn for - the things that cost money. This is partly how money gets a bad rap. We want something but an apparent lack of money stands in our way of having it on the physical plane and so we build this love/hate relationship with money. The truth is that whatever you are seeking is seeking you and so the next step after asking for what you want is to accept it on the mental plane of existence. I know that this may appear to be airy-fairy but the Universe operates by laws and it through understanding and applying these laws that we live fulfilled lives.

There are many reasons why we don’t get what we say we want:

1.We simply don’t believe we can have it so we don’t plant the seeds necessary for what we want to manifest itself.
2.We may have the seeds but, for one reason or another, we think that they will not grow and so they remain forgotten in a jar and out of contact with the conditions that would allow them to germinate.
3.We may plant the seeds but think that they are taking too long to grow and bear fruit and so we uproot the young plants.
4.We may plant them but again neglect the seedlings so that they end up being choked by other plants or so starved of nourishment that they wither and die.
5.We fail to protect our seeds/plants from ‘predators’ and creatures that would trample our plants.
6.We fail to plant enough seeds to take into account the ones that might fail to germinate or might otherwise be lost.
7.We may plant our seeds too close together so that they compete with each other and none have sufficient nutrients to grow properly.

When a farmer plants his crops he doesn’t just leave them to their own devices. He has to remove the weeds, protect the plants from pests and adverse weather conditions. He waters the plants and provides them with fertiliser. However, before he does any of this a good farmer will analyse his soil to discover the best plants for that soil this can be likened to you finding your passion. Likewise, when you plant an idea in your mind you also have to nourish and nurture it so that it grows to fruition.

Once you recognise just how rich and abundant your life is you will find that the path to achieving even more riches is easier than you think. However, whatever path you take, the route to your greatest desires will always be through your greatest treasure - your mind. And best of all it’s free!

Do you believe the best things in life are free? Are you happy?
I don't make a lot of money. I pretty much live from pay check to pay check and sometimes wonder if I will be able to have groceries, but I get by and I'm happy. I don't go out much and I currently am not in a relationship. But I'm happy. I love to relax around my house, go for walks, bike rides, run, or just sit on the front porch and watch nature. I don't feel the need to go out and buy all the latest technology or to be noticed. I feel this lifestyle I enjoy will prevent me from meeting a nice girl, but I'm not worried about. But is it true to live this lifestyle of enjoying the little things. The things that I feel people have gotten away from in society of love from your family and close friends, and enjoying the simple things are the best. I believe the best things in life are free. How about you?

I don't have a lot, but I worked for everything I do have. I don't want any more than I have now, and somewhere along my normal day, I was lucky enough to meet the perfect man that feels the same as I do.
So yes, I believe the best things in life ARE free, but you do have to work to keep a roof over your head! LOL….

Absolutely the best things in life are free. One of my favorite things to do is watch the hummingbirds that have been coming to my feeder that I've had out for the past ten years. Some of them are so used to me they have let me touch them.

I'm one of those people who finds shapes in clouds, so I like watching the clouds move.

Watching nature is probably my favorite pastime, and yes, I am very happy. I'm glad to read that there are others like me!

Yes, very much. Nature has provided us all the required things free. If we lead a contended life within our means we can certainly live happily. Most of us do not understand the purpose of earning money. We increase our needs without limit to spend our earnings. The abnormal consumerism is overtaking our requirements. Hoarding has taken the place of saving. You are lucky to have a mindset to lead the life of happiness.

I think the ability to enjoy is free, but the means to get there obviouslyt cost you. You want to go out and take a hike in the woods? Do you live there already, or do you have to buy gas and car materials. Gotta have shoes, clothes to get there, and water in case you get thirsty, though if you fancy a kip from the local stream, that'd work too.
Everything costs, but the sunken costs of items and serivces (your bike being paid off, the rent paid for three months) can rather imply, cheekily enough, that it is in need free, or not cost.

Wow, that's very nice that you enjoy the little things that everyone pushes away for technology (i.e. computers, t.v.'s etc.), if I entertained myself the way you do though, I'd be bored all day. :O) Good to know someone notices the little things and that technology ISN'T a necessity. I too believe the best things in life are simple and free. Here are some examples:
    -Park
    -Library
    -School (excluding college)
    -Beach
    -Nature
    -Friends
    -Family
-Feelings (such as love, happy, etc.)
    -Bird-watching
    -Enjoying nature
    -Pool (some, not all)
-Life (not exactly free, but did you have to PAY to be born?)
Hope that helps, the best of luck with your Anti-tech world :). ♣continue rockin♣ P.S: It's basically a matter of opinion. :O)

Money only pays for comfort, not happiness.

However, if I had the money to pay for a lawyer to get a divorce, then I would be free to be with the one I love, then I would be completely happy.

It depends on the persons perception on the best things in life. For one it may be having a high profile career & hence one's happiness is derived in seeing growth in career etc

On a personal opinion, the very reason why you'll get the a great girl is because you enjoy the simple things in life.

As the theme of the pixar's animated cartoon "Ratatouille" - don't be afraid to find your self & when you do find - don't be afraid of being yourself.

Thats great that you are in a place in your life that you can be content or even happy with what you have..Yes i agree that real happiness is not an outward thing but an inward thing although most people would tell you otherwise.i am at a point in my life where i am trying to finish up my education and get a better paying job so that i can afford to buy a house in the ridiculously overpriced market where i live.(Florida).i can say that honestly i was probably happier although not as realistic when i was younger, had less material posessions, but less responisiblity as well. There comes a point in time when you will most likely want to own a house or desire some other "thing" and the fact of the matter is that these "things" are not attainable without money.more possessions bring more responsiblity and more stress..yes..but in this society that is a normal way of life.i think there is a happy middleground, you shouldnt be a slave to superficial possessions, as long as you have money for food, bills, and gas and the occasional recreational excursion, be it a vacation or a new "toy" as long as it doesnt land you in debt, than you should be happy..I personally couldnt imagine haveing to go back to living paycheck to paycheck.i lived that way for a long time and i was miserable. SO id would say that some of the best things in life are free, but some cost money too.Enjoy being happy and dont let you happiness be tied to "things" but definetely plan for the future, you are setting yourself up for failure if you dont..it only takes one emergency or one unexpected expense to throw your life out of wack when you live paycheck to pay…at least financially speaking.

I do believe the best things in Life are free. We are living paycheck to paycheck… any money that isnt going into bills is for food. We love to take walks together, play games together, we play catch with the kids… i mean spending time doing fun things dont cost money at all.
We used to spend lots of time just sitting on the front porch and talking. We enjoy each other…
I think it also teaches the kids that you can have fun without all the electronic fancy gadgets.

Very few things in life are really free. My tax money goes into creating parks and wildlife reserves and a host of things other readers suggest.
The few things I believe is free is a parents love for a child, air (untill some new legislation will curtail that), and what little nature we have left…
PS Other types of love (romantic) is not really free. Its a two-way street, You have to give something to receive.

The magic of life is in the little things
Like the beauty of roses and butterflies wings

A glass of water, a nice warm bath
A walk along the garden path

Curling up in bed at night
Being witness to dawns first light

Celebrating the gift of each new day
Making new friends along the way

Discovering how precious silence can be
Watching the wind caressing a tree

Life is full of magical delights
Fun filled days and passionate nights

When you look at life, what do you see?
The most precious gifts are abundant and free
