What’s the best seed mix for a lovebird that eats mostly seeds?

Posted on Feb 15, 2010 under Best Seeds | 4 Comments

My birds hate vegetables and corn and celery and stuff, they won’t even go near it. They clean their beaks after even just touching it. Does anyone know any good seed mixes that won’t harm them as much as the fattier seed mixes? I normally feed them kaytee..
btw they hate pellets and dried corn. but they do like peanuts. is that unhealthy?

Lafeber Nutri-berries.
They have seeds, but healthier seeds. It’s already hulled, but they enrich them with vitamins and minerals. Also they have, depending on what type you want, veggies, fruits or just seeds and nuts(like peanuts). They come in different sizes, but most birds prefer them broken up in their dish.

Here are some links for different flavors.

I have heard that peanuts can contain aflatoxin and so can be dangerous for pet birds. All the advice I have read on feeding is that you have to give them the healthy stuff over and over, sometimes for months, before they will eat it. I had a bird that got really sick on pellets, so now have them on a mix that has seeds, pellets and dried fruit/vegetables.
The way I have gotten mine to eat good stuff is to make a meal I can eat and set some to the side on my plate(human saliva can make them sick so don’t share what your fork has touched!) and they come over and pick out beans and broccoli, bits of rice etc. Important not to add salt or other things they can’t have but when they see you eat it, then they may want it. Check out holisticbird yahoo group for advice from more experienced bird folks.
