What are the best tomatoes for sauce and where is the best place to get the seeds, preferably heirloom organic

Posted on Sep 25, 2009 under Best Tomatoes |

My favorite heirloom sauce tomato is Amish paste. You can get certified organic seed at http://www.fedcoseed.com and http://www.seedsavers.org.

Opalka is my second favorite. Flavor is about as good but the Amish paste yield about 3x more.

Roma is a good sauce tomato but a hybrid, not heirloom.

Best time to pick tomatoes and green+yellow peppers?

Roma tomatoes are supposed to be the best for sauce, because they have relatively few seeds (more fleshy meat) and they are lower in acidity than other varieties.

You can get roma tomato seeds anywhere that sells seeds. But, I would recommend buying established plants from a nursery and transplanting them into your garden.

I think the Beef steak tomatoes make better sause. Because my mother made it that way.

I would not wory about a seed being organic. If you grow it organicly I t will taste great.

I am gonna try this variety this year—>

    Jersey Giant New!
This New Jersey canning variety is on the verge of extinction! Large, 6" long pepper-shaped fruit are packed with great tomato flavor. Delicious fresh from the garden. Their large size makes them a snap to can. Their thick, rich flesh is much tastier than modern paste types, and the fruit have very few seeds. One of my personal favorites.

this is the best place been using them for a few years and Very Happy

Roma tomatoes are said to be the best, but they arent heirloom. Napoli is a nice paste tomatoethats you can get that is Heirloom and many places offer it up organic as well. Victory seeds has a lot of heirloom, organic and hard to find rare tomatoes.
