What variety of tomatoes make the best marinara sauce?

Posted on Mar 14, 2010 under Best Tomatoes |

I’m planning a garden and while I’m not crazy about eating tomatoes, marinara sauce is something my family consumes constantly, so why not make my own. I want to make something really good but i guess it’s important to note also that my husband doesn’t like his sauce really sweet (though I’m sure the sweetness in commercial sauces comes from corn syrup) so please take that into consideration when you make a recommendation.

Roma of course!

What are the best tasting Tomatoes that I can grow myself in the UK?

There are any number of good "canning" tomato varieties. My favorite is the Roma too! They are nice sturdy plants and if in good soil, will produce a good number of egg shaped tomatoes. Really meaty, little goo and seeds.

Any tomato can be canned, turned into sauce or juice. Just some are better than others. Even eating tomatoes will make a better sauce than what you buy in the store! Just will take longer to cook down and get thick because of the higher water content. So if the neighbor gets over run with eating tomatoes and offers them to you, don’t be afraid to take them!

I am going to try making some "sun" dried tomatoes this year in my dehydrator. I love the things added to pasta and out here in the sticks they are almost impossible to find. And I want to make a batch of "roasted" tomato sauce too. The tomatoes are roasted in the oven rather than cooked on the stove and then turned into sauce.
