Calling all kitchen wizards…Best ways of storing different types of vegetables?

Posted on Jul 24, 2009 under Best Vegetables |

What are the best ways of storing different types of vegetables so they stay fresh? Wrapped or unwrapped, in or out of the fridge?

The best way to store root veg (potatoes, carrots, parsnips, swede etc is in newspaper and in a dark place) Keeping them in the plastic bags makes em sweat and being in a dark place simulates their natural under soil environment. All other veg should be kept in the fridge covered but again, out of the plastic bags.

depends on the veggie. i clean and separate the lettuce, put it in a zip lock bag, and store in crisper. during the cooler months i keep potatoes and onions in a basket out of the fridge. carrots and celery need to be in fridge crisper in zip lock baggies, along with broccoli , squash and cauliflower if your going to use tomatoes right away they taste better room temp. if not they can stay in crisper without a bag..

Unwrapped, but covered from light. In a cool larder would be ideal.
    Last for months.
