What in the world are people thinking when they cook their steaks well done?
its called "red meat." its SUPPOSED to be red. but, seriously, well done just ROBS it of ALL the flavor and juiciness. and you dont have to cook a steak well done to "make it safe to eat." im just trying to help you out here… WELL DONE IS NOT GOOD.
    RED MEAT.

That’s your opinion. In MY opinion, well done is the best way to cook and eat a steak,or any other meat.Meadium rare is just plain NASTY.You’re making it sound like it’s better to eat uncooked steak than have it well done.Yuck!

I know what you are talking about. My mom is a well doner and sticks to the idea that it is not safe unless it is jerky!! And now I work at a steak house and I see ALOT of people destroy thier steak…then wonder why they have to drown it in A-1 for it to taste like anything.

It’s a mental thing mate, the more it’s cook, the deader they recon it is. They see red and they think it’s still bleeding.

It’s different to everyone, I like mine either medium or medium rare, it has to be nice and juicy, well done is like biting a cube of carbon.

I like my steak rare to medium-rare.

But when cooking out and drinking beer, I like to throw the cold slices of steak (rib steak, top sirloin, chuck eye, porterhouse) back on the fire while the coals are starting to decline. I don’t burn the slices, but cook them well done and crispy. It’s good stuff really, and great with beer. Try it! I guarantee you’ll like it.

It seems that people have many reasons for asking to have their steaks prepared "well done" but none of them have to do with flavor. For experiencing the full flavor of a nice piece of steak it should remain juicy and tender. Also the addition of flavors should bring out the flavor not bury it. A bit of salt, pepper corns, garlic, etc can enhance your enjoyment of the steaks own flavor and even a nicely prepared sauce won’t take away from taste. The heavy and over processed flavors found in most bottles of steak sauce cover the flavor of the meat rather than enhance it which is why it is often found on every table of a restaurant serves lower grade meats that may be short on flavor.

When it comes to food logically taste should be the most important factor however other elements come into play which is what makes the psychology of eating so interesting.
